Festive October but in September

October 4, 2025

My stereotype of Oktoberfest is: in October, people gather together and drink beers like crazy. Well, it turns out not that factual.

First off, Oktoberfest starts in September (???), and I still haven’t figured out why. Not everyone drinks like crazy. And there are way more choices than beers, Radler (50-50 mix of beer and lemonade), alcohol-free beers (not really beers?), and ciders (definitely not beers!).

Not really into drinking is not a problem. There is still so much to do, such as take photos with absolutely ginormous beer mugs.

Oh right, where is the snack that goes with my beers (and non-beers)? It’s not a problem of course, just look at the beautiful pretzels that were held aloft, floating from table to table, waiting to be devoured.

Many probably know that the Statue of Liberty in New York City is a gift from France. Looking at the pretzel boy, I can’t help thinking what would happen if it had been Munich to choose the gift. It has to be a gigantic pretzel, right?

After a few beers, feeling a little lightheaded, we went outside for some fresh air. Outside the massive beer tents, there’s a huge amusement park, perfect for wandering around and letting the buzz fade away.

Or feel like taking a swirl on the swing or the ferris wheel?

I have an unfortunate tendency to procrastinate quite a bit when it comes to sorting my photos and writing the blog post. A few months late isn’t unusual at all. But this time, I made an exception for these Oktoberfest pictures and got to them a bit sooner. Partly because I want to do it when the joy of beers hasn’t quite worn off yet. But mostly because of one simple thought: if you’re going to post Oktoberfest photos, well, they really ought to come out in October, right?

Anyway, happy October!
